Parameters Measured

Carbon Dioxide

Carbon Dioxide is measured in parts per million.

Carbon dioxide (known as CO2) is a colorless, odorless gas that is vital to life on Earth. CO2 is produced by every living creature (including humans) as a normal part of the respiration process (breathing). CO2 is also produced during decay of organic materials, and fermentation (bread, beer, wine). It is produced by combustion of wood and other organic materials and fossil fuels. Natural sources include volcanoes, hot springs, and geysers.

CO2 is a very versatile industrial material that is used in fire extinguishers and as a pressuring gas in air guns as well as many other applications. It is added to water and other beverages to add effervescence. The frozen solid form of CO2 is known as dry ice and is used as a refrigerant.

CO2 is a significant greenhouse gas with elevated levels leading to global warming. CO2 also causes ocean acidification because it dissolves in water to form carbonic acid.
